We were looking for sunshine and beautiful views of the sea…
We set our sights on Greece and decided to spent 1 week in Santorini in May for a short stay.
I have never seen such beautiful views 🙂 No regrets but in May, it is already a bit crowded so booking is essential!
When: inmay, swimming is possible and tourist attendance is already well present so avoid July/August… The months of September/October must also be pleasant.
Budget: Get your booking as soon as possible to lower prices as much as possible (Get a free night with Hotel.com). You have two ways to get there: Flight to Athens + Ferry (Pyreus port) (5 to 7h to get to Santorin from Athens with a ferry). Family hostels starting from 50 €. Food is cheap and delicious ^^
We spent 6 days in Santorini to make the most of this magical island but you could also split your stay in 2 islands with 4 days in Santorini & 2 days in Paros or Naxos.
Transportation: moto rentals + local Bus
Day 1: Installation at the hotel ( a magical stay at Marquise Suites). We spent our entire stay based at FIRA, which is convenient for us to travel all over the island on our scooters. Many restaurants and a wide choice of accommodation. It is the capital of the island… but the most charming village is undeniably Oia.
Day 2: Village of Oia and descent to the port of Ammundi, swimming along after the small restaurants (where you have to stop to eat for lunch, the place is great). Steep ascent (it pulls on the legs!-). Return to Fira after sunset…
Day 3: Ruins of Akrotiri and Red Sand Beach, village of Pyrgos (nice to walk through its charming little streets and stop for lunch before continuing on red beach and akrotiri)
Day 4: Black sand beach on Perissa, less impressive than the red sand beach, nice for a short swim break. We return the scooter to Fira and then take the bus to Oia (we absolutely wanted to go back there before leaving again!) From there, we take a walk renowned as the most beautiful hike on the island: From Oia to Fira: count about 3 hours; bring good shoes and plenty of water! A stroll not to be missed, sublime views of the caldera, one of the highlights of the stay!
Day 5: For once, we book the day before, a group excursion to walk on the volcano in front of the island and test the hot springs (about 30 euros), all by boat with return to the sunset. You can also privatize a catamaran for a more intimate experience but it is much more expensive!
Day 6: We go for a last walk in Fira, to do some shopping (unfortunately in the rain!) and we take the plane back the next day very early in the morning….
We love: During our one week in Santorini, the views of the terraces, the sunsets in Oia, the hike between Oia and Fira, the small port of Ammoundi and its swimming spot… the hotel where we choose to stay (Marquise Suites)
