A 3-day itinerary around Sarlat in the “Périgord Noir” to discover this beautiful region with a mix of heritage, gastronomy and nature. Ideal for a short stay in couple or family! The car is needed. Best season: April to october.
Night walk near Sarlat
Day 1: First evening in Sarlat where we choose to stay 3 nights. A wonderful medieval town, typically French! Our perfect hotel located in the countryside: Les Glycines.
2. Beynac & La Roque Gageac – villages
Day 2: Go to Beynac to spend the all morning. Climb quietly to the top and visit the castle (8€). The village is superb and the view from the top offers a panoramic view over the entire Dordogne valley. Not to be missed!

Then go to Carsac for having lunch at one of the finest table in the area “O moulin’. A gastronomic restaurant in an old mill, fabulous !
Afternoon: visit of Roque Gageac… Exceptional site for this unusual village on a hillside. Also a place to observe peregrine falcons and black Milan for bird watchers in the soul come with binoculars.

Another option: Discover the villages of the Dordogne valley by boat. We had planned to go down by canoe but the cold weather changed our minds.

3. The must-see: Gouffre de Padirac & Rocamadour village
Not to be missed: Small drive during this day dedicated to 2 major regional tourism sites: the Abyss of Padirac & Rocamadour.
The Gouffre de Padirac is impressive with its underground rivers that can be crossed by boat.
Rocamadour is very beautiful and stunning but many many tourists…
Day 4: Before departure, visit of the Marqueyssac gardens, great place for a long walk and a breathtaking view on the castles around. Make sure to do some shopping in Sarlat traditionnal market before you leave. Do not forget to bring back “Foie gras du Périgord”.
If you can manage some extra days: You can drive to Périgueux, Monbazillac, Brantome or Lascaux.
