8 days in Iceland

Magnificent landscapes, breathtaking waterfalls, so many superlatives for this country! Horses in the middle of nowhere, photos at every corner of the road, in short, a surprising country! Here is our roadmap step by step for 8 days in Iceland….

Jour 1 Thingvellir
Thingvellir

When to leave:  may was perfect

Day 1: Arrival to Reykjavik

Restful night of sleep at Midgardur Centerhotel – very good & central location. Booked in advance online !

Day 1: Morning departure by road 36 to Pingvellir, a magnificent one-hour walk to observe the rift area.

A trip to Geysir and then to Gullfoss, a must!!!!

Relaxation stop at Secret Lagoon then passage to the peat village of Keldur before arriving in Seljalandsfoss.

Overnight in Akurey at the Lindartun guesthouse, a great place to stay, very clean, cosy and an incredible breakfast!

Day 2: We head to Seljalandsfoss

Stop at Skogafoss, gorgeous!

Back on the road to Dyrholaey, a must with the 2 points of view, lodged and Hoey

Lunch at Vik next to the church and then a walk on the road to Pakgil, breathtaking landscapes but we could only drive 7 km.

Then descent to Reynisfjara, the famous black sand beach with its basalt organs…

Night stay at Carina hotel close to Vik. Very nice place to stay close to the beach. Nice welcome and we even got a room with sea view 😉 !

Jour 2 Reynisfjara

Day 3: Departure on Route 1 with a stop in Laufskálavarða.

According to tradition, there was a large farm called Laufskalar there. This farm was destroyed in 894 by the first recognized eruption of Katla volcano. All travellers who pass through this area for the first time are supposed to lay down a stone for good luck on their journey. As a result, this place is composed of several hundred small cairns that give a surrealist aspect to this place.

Second quick stop on Route 1 at Skaftafeldaraun, a set of small moss domes

Then third stop in Kirkjugolf and Dverghamrar before starting a good part of the road to Svartifoss

45 min walk to admire the amazing waterfall amidst the basalt organs, followed by a one hour walk to admire the Skaftafellsjökull glacier

To finish off this magnificent day in style, stop at Fjallsárlón, Jokulsarlon’s little brother and then Jokulsarlon.

Night at hotel Jokull close to Höfn.

Jour 3 Jokulsarlon

Day 4: From Höfn to the Viking movie set in Vestrahorn, with Stokksnes beach.

Then stop quickly to take photo at Stapavík Rock.

A marvel 3 km before arriving in Djúpivogur for lunch: a hot pot in the middle of nature! Divine….

Lunch break next to eggin í gledivik, the set of eggs lined up

Passage through the eastern fjords but in the fog!

Arrival for the night on a magical accommodation: Skardas Country cabins. Possibility to have a barbecue on the terrace of your own chalet! Located in Egilsstadir

Jour 4 Hot Pot
The perfect Skardas Country Cabin….

Day 5: Seydisfjordur in the morning since we couldn’t do it the day before.

Then start on 150 km of Route 1 to Dettifoss with a quick stop at Jokulsa Canyon.

Unexpected stop and not mentioned on any map when it is well worth the stop: the Rjukandafoss fall!

Visit of Dettifoss, spectacular, as well as the walk that leads to the nearby Selfoss Falls.

Then, stop at the hot springs of Hverir, not to be missed!

Stop at Grjótagjá on the way and climb the Hverfell volcano, very nice and easy to climb in 20 min walk.

Then stop at Dimmuborgir and Höfdi.

End of the day at the Jardbödin natural baths

Night in Mitvatn at Laxa hotel.

Jour 5 Godafoss

Day 6: Stop at the beautiful fall of Godafoss less big than the previous ones but still very pretty.

Then stop at Akureyri.

Departure for Siglufjordur, a beautiful small fishing port.

Relaxation at the end of the day at the Hot Pot de Fossgaul, not easy to find but so worth it, just like the waterfall overlooking it…

Night stay at BlönduosRétro house

Day 7: Tour of the Vatnsnes peninsula with a very nice viewpoint at Borgarvirki then at Hvitserkur, and on the west, seal observation.

Then, head south with a little road 1 for a break in height at Borgarfjordur.

Quick stop in Reykholt, then arrival at the Borgarnes guesthouse

Day 8: Day trip to Reykjavik to finish this beautiful journey and end of the loop. Night in another hotel than the one on the way: By the lighthouse, a strategic location 18km from the airport. A studio with an independent kitchen to make your own meal (restaurants are very expensive in Iceland so it is very interesting to have the kitchen at the same time as the accommodation)
